IELTS or PTE for Australia and Canada: Which Scores Better for Your Points?

IELTS or PTE for Australia is a different question from IELTS or PTE for Canada, because the two countries do not accept the same tests. Australia takes PTE Academic. Canada takes PTE Core. They are separate exams, and a result from one is worthless to the other. IELTS is accepted by both, with conditions. Choose the test before you choose the score.

IELTS or PTE for Australia and Canada: how each country converts your English score into migration points

IELTS or PTE for Australia and Canada: which test does each one accept?

Start here, because almost every comparison article skips it and it is the part that costs real money.

Australia accepts PTE Academic. IRCC is explicit that You must take the PTE Core option, and PTE Academic will not do. Those two products share a brand and almost nothing else that matters to you: different content, different score report, different acceptance. A candidate who books PTE Academic because a cousin used it for Australia, and then applies to Canada, has bought a test result Canada will not read.

IELTS is the more forgiving choice across both. Australia accepts IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training for its English levels. Canada requires the General Training option specifically for Express Entry. So one General Training sitting can serve both countries, where PTE cannot.

There is a second difference underneath that one. Australia accepts IELTS results that include One Skill Retake for eligible visas. IRCC states plainly that We don’t accept IELTS One Skill Retake for Express Entry. If you are the kind of candidate whose speaking is fine and whose writing wobbles, that single line decides whether a cheap second attempt at one skill can rescue your application or whether you sit the whole thing again.

Before you pay a booking fee. Write down your destination first, then the visa stream, then the test. Doing it the other way round is how people end up holding a valid, expensive, useless score report. Our two minute test chooser asks the questions in that order.

What is English actually worth on the Australian points test?

As of 23 August 2026, Australia pays Superior English 20 points on the skilled points test, Proficient English 10, and Competent English nothing at all. That is the whole reason this question matters. Twenty points is a large slice of a competitive total, and English is one of the few components you can still move after you have finished studying and started working.

The three levels are defined by score, not by judgement. Proficient English means, as of 23 August 2026, at least 7 for listening and 7 in each of the other three components. Superior English, as of 23 August 2026, means at least 8 for listening and 8 in every other component of IELTS. Competent English, the floor for most skilled visas, is 6 in each component.

Read those again and notice what they are not. They are not overall bands. Australia looks at each of the four components separately, so an overall 8.0 built on a 7.0 in writing is not Superior English. It is Proficient, and the difference is ten points.

That structure rewards a very specific kind of candidate: the one with no weak skill. A student with 9, 9, 9 and 6.5 has a magnificent overall band and scores as Competent, which is worth nothing. A student with a flat 8, 8, 8, 8 has a lower overall band and takes the full twenty. If you are preparing for Australia, your weakest component is the only number that matters.

Why most PTE advice you will read is now out of date

Australia rebuilt its approved-test list on 7 August 2025, and the version of PTE Academic accepted from that date is, in the department's own words, a different test with different scores.

Under the old rules the PTE thresholds were flat and easy to remember: 50 in each component for Competent, 65 for Proficient, 79 for Superior. Those numbers are still repeated across coaching sites, YouTube and agency blogs. For a test taken today they are wrong.

Competent English on the new PTE Academic is, as of 23 August 2026, 47 for listening, 48 reading, 51 writing and 54 speaking. On the PTE Academic accepted since August 2025, and as of 23 August 2026, Superior English needs 69 for listening but 88 for speaking, which is not a flat line at all. Proficient sits at 58 listening, 59 reading, 69 writing and 76 speaking.

Look at the shape of that. On the current PTE Academic, Australia asks for a 19 point spread between the easiest and hardest component at Superior level. Speaking and writing carry far higher bars than listening and reading. The test did not simply get harder; it got lopsided, and in a direction that punishes exactly the candidates who were told PTE is the easy option because the machine marks your speaking.

What this means in practice. If somebody quotes you a flat PTE number for an Australian visa, they are working from the pre August 2025 table. Check the current requirement on the department's own page for your level, and check the date on any advice you are given.

How does Canada turn your score into CLB?

Canada does not ask for a band. It asks for a Canadian Language Benchmark, a scale from 1 to 12 that lets results from different tests be compared fairly. Your raw scores are converted per skill, and it is the CLB level that generates your points.

CLB 9, the level that unlocks the highest language points, is IELTS 7.0 speaking, 8.0 listening, 7.0 reading and 7.0 writing. The same CLB 9 on PTE Core is, as of 23 August 2026, listening 82-88, reading 78-87, speaking 84-88 and writing 88-89.

The listening requirement is the trap. On IELTS, CLB 9 wants a full band more in listening than in the other three skills, which catches candidates who assume the levels move together. Miss 8.0 in listening by half a band and that skill drops to CLB 8, taking a point with it, no matter how strong the other three are.

Canadian results must be less than 2 years old when you submit, which is shorter than the three years Australia allows. A result that comfortably covers an Australian application can expire in the middle of a Canadian one, and a two year clock runs faster than it sounds when a skills assessment and a provincial nomination sit in front of you.

Choosing on your skill profile rather than on rumour

Once you know which tests your destination accepts, the choice between them is a question about you, not about the tests.

  • Strong speaker, weaker writer. IELTS speaking is a conversation with a person and rewards fluency and range. PTE speaking is scored by machine from recorded tasks and rewards clear, evenly paced delivery. If a live examiner steadies you, IELTS. If a microphone does, PTE.
  • Weak under time pressure in reading. Australia's current PTE bars are lowest in reading and listening, so a candidate who reads slowly but speaks confidently may reach Superior more easily on PTE than on IELTS, where every component needs an 8.
  • Applying to Canada at all. Remember it is PTE Core, and remember One Skill Retake will not help you there. Many candidates take IELTS General Training for exactly that reason.
  • Needing a result quickly. PTE typically returns results faster than IELTS. Where a nomination deadline is close, turnaround can matter more than a half band.
  • Applying to universities as well as to a visa. Universities usually want IELTS Academic or PTE Academic, so check the admission requirement before you optimise purely for the migration one.

What none of that tells you is where you actually stand today, and that is the input every one of these decisions needs. Guessing your own writing level is the single least reliable thing in test preparation, which is the whole reason this site grades writing against the official descriptors and gives the same answer the same score every time.

The mistakes that cost the most

  • Booking PTE Academic for a Canadian application, or PTE Core for an Australian one. The money is gone and so are the weeks.
  • Booking IELTS Academic for Express Entry when General Training is what IRCC asks for.
  • Working from a flat PTE number for Australia that was replaced in August 2025.
  • Chasing an overall band when both systems score you component by component.
  • Assuming One Skill Retake is a universal safety net. It is not accepted by IRCC.
  • Sitting a fully online version of a test for convenience, then finding Australia will not accept it.
  • Letting a Canadian result age past two years while a nomination is pending.

Every one of those is a paperwork error rather than an English problem, and every one is avoidable in an afternoon of checking. If you would rather have somebody check it with you, an adviser will go through it free of charge.

A worked example, with the numbers in front of you

Take a candidate in Lahore, an engineer, with a practice profile of listening 8.0, reading 7.5, writing 6.5 and speaking 7.5 on IELTS. She is considering both countries.

For Australia. Her weakest component is writing at 6.5, so she is Competent English: zero points. Lifting writing to 7.0 makes her Proficient and adds 10 points. Lifting everything to 8.0 makes her Superior and adds 20. Her whole English strategy is a writing strategy, and nothing else she does moves the number.

For Canada. Her listening 8.0 reaches CLB 9. Reading 7.5 gives CLB 9. Speaking 7.5 gives CLB 10. Writing 6.5 gives CLB 8. She is not blocked the way she is in Australia, because Canada scores each skill separately and pays per skill, but that writing 6.5 still costs her a point she could have had.

What she should do. One test, IELTS General Training, which serves both. All preparation aimed at writing, because in both systems it is her binding constraint. And a decision about One Skill Retake that depends entirely on which country she commits to, since Australia would let her retake writing alone and Canada would not. Read our breakdown of how IELTS writing is scored if writing is your constraint too, because the four criteria are where that half band is hiding.

What happens after you have the score?

A score is a gate, not a destination. Past it sit the parts that actually decide whether you move: the skills assessment, the expression of interest, the points total, the nomination, the financial documents, and a visa application that can be refused for reasons that have nothing to do with your English.

That is where Borders and Bridges comes in, and it is the reason this practice site is free. Lahore based, working with students and skilled applicants since 2016, registered with SECP and FBR, ICEF accredited and a British Council verified agent. The practice tools cost nothing because the business earns further along the road.

Two honest notes about that stage. A refusal is a list of doubts rather than a verdict, and people abandon recoverable applications because a refusal letter reads like a door closing. And nobody, this firm included, can promise you a visa or a band. What an experienced adviser can do is read your actual position, tell you which country your profile really suits, and say plainly when the answer is not the one you hoped for.

The short version

  • Australia takes PTE Academic. Canada takes PTE Core. Different tests, not interchangeable.
  • Canada requires IELTS General Training and does not accept One Skill Retake. Australia accepts both IELTS versions and does accept One Skill Retake for eligible visas.
  • Australia pays 20 points for Superior English, 10 for Proficient, nothing for Competent.
  • Both countries score you component by component, so your weakest skill sets your level.
  • Australia's PTE thresholds changed on 7 August 2025 and are no longer a flat number.
  • CLB 9 needs IELTS 8.0 in listening but only 7.0 in the other three.
  • Canadian results expire in under two years. Australian ones generally last three.

Frequently asked questions

Is PTE easier than IELTS for Australia?

Not straightforwardly. Since August 2025 the PTE Academic thresholds are uneven across the four components, so PTE is now easier on listening and reading and harder on speaking and writing than the old flat scores suggested. Superior English needs 69 listening but 88 speaking. Whether that suits you depends entirely on which of your four skills is strongest, which is why you should measure before you book.

Can I use the same PTE result for both Australia and Canada?

No, and this is the most expensive mistake in this whole subject. Australia accepts PTE Academic. Canada accepts PTE Core for Express Entry. They are different tests with different content and different score reports, and a result from one is not accepted by the other. If you are applying to both countries you either sit both tests or you use IELTS, which both accept in some form.

Does Canada accept IELTS Academic?

Not for Express Entry. IRCC requires the IELTS General Training option. Universities in Canada usually want IELTS Academic for admission, so a student who plans to study and then apply for permanent residence often ends up needing both versions at different stages.

Does Canada accept IELTS One Skill Retake?

No. IRCC does not accept One Skill Retake results for Express Entry, so if one skill lets you down you must sit the whole test again. Australia does accept One Skill Retake for eligible visas, though you should check the specific visa page. This is a genuine difference between the two systems and it is worth knowing before you pin your hopes on a single-skill fix.

How many points is English worth for Australian skilled migration?

On the Skilled Independent points table, Superior English is worth 20 points, Proficient English 10, and Competent English 0. Competent is the entry requirement rather than a scoring level. Twenty points is a large share of a competitive total, which is why the gap between a 7 and an 8 across all four skills matters more than almost anything else you can change quickly.

What is CLB and why does Canada use it?

Canadian Language Benchmarks are a national scale from 1 to 12 that Canada uses so results from different tests can be compared on equal terms. Your IELTS or PTE Core scores are converted to a CLB level per skill, and it is the CLB level, not the raw score, that produces your points. That is why a Canadian requirement is written as CLB 7 rather than as a band.

What IELTS score is CLB 9?

CLB 9 is 7.0 speaking, 8.0 listening, 7.0 reading and 7.0 writing. Notice the listening requirement is a full band higher than the other three, which surprises people who assume the levels are symmetrical. Missing 8.0 in listening alone pulls that skill down to CLB 8 and costs a point.

How long are results valid for each country?

Canada requires results less than two years old at the point you complete your profile and again when you submit. Australia generally works to three years before the visa application, and results from tests taken on or before 6 August 2025 may still be used until 6 August 2028 depending on the visa. Check the specific visa page rather than assuming, because validity varies by subclass.

Are online or at-home tests accepted?

Australia does not accept tests delivered completely online, and names IELTS Online, TOEFL iBT Home Edition and OET@Home among the versions it will not take. If you sit a remote-proctored test for convenience you may find the result is unusable for the visa, even though the same brand of test at a centre would have been fine.

Should I take IELTS if I am applying to both countries?

It is usually the simpler path, because Australia accepts IELTS Academic or General Training and Canada accepts IELTS General Training. One General Training sitting can therefore serve both, where PTE would require PTE Academic for Australia and PTE Core for Canada. If your target is only one country, choose on your own skill profile instead.

Can BandVisa tell me which test suits me before I book?

It can show you where you actually stand, which is the part people guess at. Submit a timed writing task and you get a band estimate against the official criteria, the same answer scoring the same way every time. Combined with the two-minute test chooser, that is a far better basis for booking than a forum thread. Nobody can promise you a score, and you should be wary of anyone who does.

My score came in below what I needed. What are my options?

Depending on the country and the gap: a full retake, a One Skill Retake if the authority accepts it, an Enquiry on Results, a different visa stream with a lower threshold, or a different destination. Which of those is worth the money depends on your margin, your timeline and your points total, and it is the kind of decision worth talking through with an adviser before you pay for another sitting.
